Diabetes and Your Feet

What does diabetes have to do with podiatrists and feet?

Many people don’t think “FEET” when they think about DIABETES. But foot issues are one of the most common complications of diabetes and one of the main reasons people come to see us at Blackwood Podiatry.

Diabetes can damage the nerves and/or circulation in your feet which can lead to serious complications such as infection, ulcers, severe foot deformity (Charcot Foot), gangrene or even amputation.

Because of the loss of sensation in the foot, a person with diabetes is less likely to realise when they’ve injured their foot, as they may not feel the pain.

This means they are less likely to notice and treat an injury, allowing it to progress to a more serious, advanced stage.
